The city of Amman
Amman, the modern and ancient capital of Jordan, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the World.
Built on seven hills or jabals, the city's modern buildings blend with the remnants of ancient civilizations. Honking horns give way to the beautiful call to prayer which echoes from the stately minarets which grace the city.
The profusion of gleaming white houses, kebab stalls with roasting meat, and tiny cafes where rich Arabian coffee is sipped in the afternoon sunshine, conjure a mood straight from a thousand and one nights. The most charming part of Jordan is found in the hospitality of its residents. Visitors to Jordan are continually surprised by the genuine warmth with which they are greeted. "Welcome to Jordan" is a phrase you will not soon forget.
Amman is a safe and friendly city to walk around. A stroll is the best way to discover its hidden treasures - lovely turn-of-the-century villas in Rainbow Street, glamorous modern residences in Abdoun, hidden gardens, and decorated shop-fronts. Buildings are covered with colourful tiles and curving Arabic script compete with elaborate window-dressing for your attention. Jordan is full of old and new. Whatever you are feeling, you can find it in Amman.
Feel like immersing yourself in culture and tradition? Take a walk downtown or visit the 'souq', (marketplace). Missing Western things? Go to Mecca Mall or City Mall and have a coffee at Starbucks or see a movie. Amman has everything you want in a safe and friendly environment.
Don't forget to take a weekend trip to visit the wonders of Jordan.
Visiting Jordan will be a visit of many pleasures, some expected and others delightfully surprising. You can anticipate the glories of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Petra (although it's a place that's has to be experienced to fully appreciate), but also the Roman antiquities you'll find at Jerash, which is awe inspiring and beautiful.
You will certainly be taken with the great physical diversity of this small nation: from the temperate north to the southern deserts and the beautiful resort areas on the Dead Sea and at Aqaba on the Red Sea, Jordan offers something to please every traveler.
In addition to the country's many wonderful sights and attractions, the most pleasant part of your visit will be the warm welcome you'll receive from Jordanian citizens, young and old.
